I`d doubt the throttle body has anything to do with it, when its about ready to go the computer will lose contact with the throttle body when the short is happening the car will lose speed (throttle is unresponsive) this short only takes about 2 to 5 sec until the computer picks up the malfunctioning throttle body at which time the cruise controle if set will boost the car with full throttle recovering the speed it lost which is only about 2 or 3 mph, so for it to boost full out for only 3 mph and then resume normal speed creates a very bucky ride. I`m currently experiencing a failing throttle body (awaiting the new one in the mail) and mpg is untouched from normal.
First thing I would suspect in your case is a failing Air mass meter. I heard when it starts to fail your mpg is affected greatly.
