You probably broke or bent the reverse lock mechanism in the shifter. I woul d just remove the whole lock. I have a GS shifter in mine and removed the reverse lock.
You have to remove the console and remove the cast aluminum shifter housing. Not hard, but a lot of screws. I would spend $140 on the GS shifter and install that while you have it all apart. YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE IN SHIFTING!!! The GS is great and deserves capital letters.
Without the lock you don't have to put it in reverse to get the key out. As I remember you remove on screw and take out the lock.....very easy to do once you are in there.
