Based on my experiences with the identical problem on a 2008 Aero, I DO NOT recommend use of WD-40 or any other solvent type lubricant for this problem. My result was a cylinder that went from 15% problematic behavior to 100% problematic as the WD-40 dissolved all remaining original grease in the accessory release mechanism within the cylinder.

1) Go to your local Dealer and order a new cylinder keyed to match your car. Cost will be $45 to $50 and it will require 4 to 6 weeks to arrive.

2) In the meantime, remove the cylinder and lubricate the ramp the detent pin slides along with a very light grease. The problem is caused by the detent pin hanging up on this ramp due to friction. In the case of my cylinder it actually formed a tiny burr on the ramp that would stop the pin completely.

To remove the cylinder:
1) Grasp the plastic surround and twist it 15 degrees or so counter-clockwise, then lift off. It will be captive to the car by the wires to the immobilizer sensor.

2) Disconnect the immobolizer wires at the connector, or find a way to move the plastic surround out of your way.

3) Insert the ignition key and turn the cylinder to 'OFF', the 12 o'clock position.

4) Insert a 3mm hex key (or similar sized piece of stiff steel) into the square hole found at the 4 o'clock position of the aluminum cylinder housing. Aim the leg of the hex key towards 2 or 3 o'clock and press the hex key inwards.

5) A latch will release the the cyliner can be lifted upwards and out by the key. It may also pop upwards enough so you can grap it without requiring use of the key.

Thirty seconds total time - no kidding!

I have read posts by other owners who soaked and aggitated the entire cylinder in a small pot of Diesel fuel to clean and lubricate it before replacing it in the car.
