A lot of times the tensioner is on sale, especially at rockauto, for little more than the price of the pulley alone. That has led me to replace the entire assembly. Rather than sacrifice a whole allen wrench to the removed part, I used a drapery hook of some kind. No doubt a nail would also fit. The new tensioner comes with a perfect sized thingie - save it for the next time. (Since my tensioners were only half used, I tape the thingie to the box the new one came in and stuff the old one, drapery hook and all, into the box for safe keeping. I have two of those now destined for the Charity Auction at SOC 13. I have a short 8mm (or 10, who can remember) bit intended for a screwdriver - I use a 1/4 inch (6mm?) ratcheting box wrench to turn it. But even the bit stops against the frame rail before the tensioner bolt comes loose, so I need to remove the wrench and remove it by had. The tensioner centers, and a pin locks into a hole, so there's no problem aligning the new one. Using a short allen key, I tighten it "good and tight" and haven't had a problem. If you're worried, use a bit of blue thread lock.
