where the designers used an edge style connector to plug into the tail light... which is not great, but to make things worse, the power and ground passengers side has to pass from one side of the female edge to the male and then back over to the other side of the female and all contacts must work or the passenger side lights go out (or fuses burn, or turn signals go double time etc)... and then as the plating of the connectors corrode and sprung contacts loosen, the current required to pass through the increased resistance causes contacts to burn, melting surrounding plastic etc... and then mechanics go and bolt ground wires on there to the chassis, which helps for a while until the next one fails...
ee 101: mechanical crap (switches, connectors, wires going through flexing joints with sharp edges etc) are the first things to fail in any circuit. minimize mechanical crap.
all engineers should be branded with stuff like that from birth...
btw, the pre-2004 SID failures are also just a bad connector (that's a pita to fix)...
