While attempting to go on vacation in our 2001 9-5 wagon (auto transmission), the car began making a howling or whistling noise in 4th gear on the highway when between 30 and 70 mph. After pulling off and inspecting the car for rubbing tires, dragging stuff, etc. we proceeded to head back home to change cars. The car is running in limp-home mode. It'll run only in 3rd gear unless it stop, when it'll quickly go thru first and second to 3rd gear when moving. The howling noise is stopped, and I have to conclude it was from 4th gear.

Also I found I have a minor coolant leak, the expansion tank was nearly empty. That's being fixed in a few days.

I have two questions - is the coolant leak at all related to the transmission problem, and what exactly might be going on with 4th gear? Thanks!
