The older 9-5's look better in all respects imho... body coloured trim might look more modern or "clean" but I don't like it as much as black. One problem with painting it a colour that is much different from black is that every time it gets scratched you will see the black through it and I think you'd have to be very careful or it would start to look ugly fast... and once it is painted it's kind of hard to revert to the original black... the original point of rub strips was to avoid minor (but costly to make right) parking lot damage! This is one of the things I dislike about many "modern" cars. That said, people do paint trim and it would probably look fine if that is the look one wanted (and was meticulous about avoiding/touching up damage)!
I would also factor in the method of painting. Did you plan to do this in situ? remove the trim? DIY or body shop? I can't imagine it being cost effective to do at a body shop, but a DIY job (especially in situ!) could look so so if you are not careful or experienced with paint.
