I have seen a method where the cowl is bent back for access. I was not interested in causing damage when replacement parts are not available. And you really need tool clearance to get at the two fasteners that hold the unit in place. You can drop those fasteners and if they fall into the well, you need to remove the unit to retrieve. Even with the cowl removed, they can be a bit difficult. I had to abandon my first efforts and order the puller that is recommended here.
Do nut pull the cowl straight up if you want to avoid breaking the clips.
