Confirm there is power to the starter via a jumper.
Ask yourself what your time is worth.
Ask yourself again.
Unbolt the exaust off the turbo and rear manifold. Take off the catalytic hangers. (ensure you are not stretching the o2 sensor lines- if so, disconnect)
Unbolt the wires off the back of the starter, and the main lead to the alternator.
Lower star bolt is easy.
Spend two days trying to fish a socket on to the upper star bolt.
Drive over to the shop that did the job 3 years ago for advice. Take it as a challenge when they assure you you do not have to take off the rear manifold.
Fish the socket on by using two small extensions, sliding it backwards over the alternator than forward toward the starter.
try to attach a ratchet handle. When successful, realize you have no room to get a click out of the ratchet.
Go to the hardware store, pick up an air powered impact ratchet. Struggle to get everything up there for an hour. Question where the bolt disappeared to. Put your smartphone camera up there and take a picture to prove it is still there. Look at the picture with disappointment when you see the bolt still there.
Question why God has put this task before you.
Here's the aha moment: Take a 7 mm deep socket and take the two screws out the back of the starter.
Pull the starter motor off, leaving the solenoid and gears . Suddenly, you have lots of room and can easily get the socket on the upper star bolt.
Attach air powered impact ratchet.
Take a breath, appreciate the three days it took to get here.
Pull trigger for two seconds, and your done.
