There are lots of electrical posts here that often are about bad batteries. I have given a bit of advice in the past on batteries, this weekend it was my turn to use my own advice.
On Sunday AM I started my car to run over to the car show that was going to feature Saabs from the LA Saab club.....My 95 Aero started very slowly with an obviously low battery. My Escort radar detector told me the voltage was under 13 volts, but charging. I brought up voltage on my ScanGauge and that too said it was charging but not 13+ like it should be.
After the car show the car cranked slowly again. When I got home I put my Harbor Freight battery tester on it and I had uner 200 cranking amps. Not good. I am supposed to have 850.
Charged it up and the battery got really warm and just would not take a charge right. I tested again and I had 11 volts and under 300 cranking amps.
I pulled the battery and brought to Pep Boys where I bought it. Luckily I had an 8 year warranty and it cost me $58 for a new battery under their warranty. This is a Bosch battery. I got 4 years out of the old one so that is not too bad.
I knew it was not in good shape even though I got no slow cranking until now. I knew because my HF tester was telling me I had 40% capacity, and wa s aware that it would be any day now that it would die.
By testing it I was not stranded somwhere, but was able to replace on my own schedule.
I love that HF tester.
