I have a '02 Aero with 119k miles on it and I have recently noticed that my coolant has leaked out through the expansion tank hose on several occasions after my car has come to a stop and has been turned off. During driving I do not notice anything unusual, temp gauge starts at cold and comes to the 9 position and never higher. If I use the AC the fans do go on, I'm not sure if they both turn on or only the high speed one turns on. The t-stat has been changed about 3 years ago due to it being stuck open.

I have found that if I park the car and then let it idle for about 15 to 20 seconds it will not let the coolant boil over. I have also noticed that after turning off the car and putting the key back in the On position before cranking position then I will hear the fans run. If I simply turn it off and pull out the keys the fans have never gone on in my 3.5 years of ownership, where-as on a '98 900 the fans would turn on after I pulled out the key to cool it (I'm not sure what the expected behavior is on a 9-5).

Additionally, up until recently I had always pulled into a garage slowly and then backed up into a spot and then shut off the car, this would all take about a minute or two and I believe would give the time to cool the engine. I mention this because this may be the reason this may not have been happening in the past.

Lastly, I know many people will mention pressure being put into the system through a leak in the head gasket. This could be a possibility but the oil has never had any coolant in it and I have never had oil in the coolant.

What should I look at?
- Are the fans not running when they should?
- Is there something wrong with the coolant expansion tank cap?
- Should I always let it idle for 20 seconds before shutting off? (I know its best to let the turbo cool before shutting off the car, but I always try to drive gently during the last few minutes of a drive thus I thought I didn't need to let it idle to cool down before shutting off.)

Thank you!
