How does Saab derive the 3500lb/165lb tongue rating or for that matter the higher UK rating (1800Kg)? Saab is saying the tongue rating can in theory be <5% of the trailer weight. The 2003 manual says "The trailer should be loaded so that the maximum load on the towbar ball is 5 % to 7 % of the trailer weight with a maximum permissible tongue weight of 110–165 lbs.
(50–75 kg)." It seems that many sites recommend the tongue weight be 10-15% of the trailer weight for camper trailers. That means for a 165lb tongue weight limit, the 9-5 can tow only 1650lb at 10%. At 5%, it's 3300lbs.
And of course the 165lbs should be adjusted for vehicle loading...how exactly seems to depend on load distribution.
Alternatively, I'm trying to determine the maximum weight I can safely tow. I have towing springs to whatever extent that changes anything. The Castia 16' Ian used is rated at:
• Approx. dry weight standard ...........1970 lbs
• Approx. dry weight deluxe .............2185 lbs
• Approx. hitch weight dry std ..........215 lbs
• Approx. hitch weight dry deluxe ...... 255 lbs
Ian, did you balance the camper to be at 165lb tongue weight?
There seem to be plenty trailers that are <3500lbs, but few with a <165lb tongue weights, especially after loaded with propane, batteries, and whatever else one might add.
