Is your buddy a Saab mechanic? Awful compared to what? Lots of people who like other brands of cars and know little about Saabs think they are hard to work on. Every brand has it's tricks, so those who do not specialize in a brand will not know the tricks and think it is harder than it is...
Personally, I find the 2.3L 9-5 pretty easy to work on for a modern car. There are some things where you will need access to a tech2 to program, but if you have a saab indy nearby, that's no big deal. All modern cars are like that. But for the most part, I would not think the 9-5 is harder to work on than the jetta (and much easier than most VW/Audi product). It is however tighter under the hood than a c900 (which imho is very easy to work on)...
Which model/year did you get? They are all turbos. Search this bb for common failure points and that will help!
