For the search engine:
Last night I started getting brake failure messages on the SID. Today I went through everything in the back of the car, having visited this subject about a year ago. One of my tail lights *was* out, but I also discovered that the right rear turn signal light would come on with the tail lights (my car is set to euro-mode). I also discovered that with all the lights off, applying the turn signal caused the dashboard and SID/ACC/radio backlights to flicker in time with the turn signal.
After various configurations of applying brakes, lights on/off, turn signal switched, and removing the light bulb holder and checking continuity- I even went so far as to swap out my trunk wiring harness with my spare trunk harness- a quick search of the boards found a post from 2005 that said to check the *front* turn signal bulbs. I found that the contacts on the base of the dual-filament bulbs had melted to a such a degree they were touching each other. Replaced bulbs and everything works fine. I am keeping all the good bulbs for spares.
I replaced all bulbs while I had everything apart- the counter people at Advanced Auto were surprised when I told them I needed a reverse lamp for the *front* of the car- it wasn't listed in their system.
Also, the brake lamps I bought last year from the dealer were marked "China", and the rear turn signal bulbs I pulled out, probably original MY2000, were marked "France".
