update - how I added trailer wiring to 2006 9-5 Posted by turbosaab [Email] (#9999) [Profile/Gallery] (more from turbosaab) on Mon, 9 Sep 2013 18:26:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Thanks for the previous advice on this - just a followup to let everyone know what worked for my 2006 9-5 which had no factory trailer wiring:
I bought a Curt 56146 SMD Trailer Wire Converter from Amazon for ~$25 - see link below. It comes with the connectors that let you tap into the wires that go to the car's tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals. These worked well, once I had everything done I realized that left turn signal wasn't working because it wasn't tight enough, one squeeze with pliers and that was fixed.
What the car *didn't* have in the back was a 12V power source. I cheated: I took a cord from a broken 12V tire inflator, which had a nice long cord, which I plug into the rear lighter socket and run under the back seats (or you could just run it through the ski pass, temporarily. The only downside is that with this setup, the trailer lights won't work unless the ignition is on. For occasional use, it's fine for me.
Here's a picture of the Harbor Freight trailer I'm towing:
