As Gene says, less of a problem from 2004 and up, but infrequent oil changes combined with many short trips can still cause problems. There was a good article in the nines a while back on the issues surrounding clogged screens etc. Some of the fundamental root causes that are still present in 2004+ are an oil pan baked by a hot catalytic converter and the fine screen of the filter. The impression I got is that they went with a finer filter in the 9-5 than the 9000 to protect a less robust (ie GM cost cutting) oil pump.
I haven't heard any stories of 2004+ 9-5's having clogged screens, but maybe some of the techs here would know better. My impression was that they were seeing a lot fewer clogged screens for 2004+...
