Maybe...Maybe not... BUT... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Thu, 10 Oct 2013 12:55:54 In Reply to: Keys needs programming?, Per, Thu, 10 Oct 2013 12:16:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The keys you will get will be physically cut for your car, but they will contain no electronics. You will swap over the electronics from your old keys by removing the back, pushing the "guts" out, including the button covers, then putting all that in the new keys. A good time to refresh the battery, too.
Now, there is some debate whether the transponder (which is separate from the keyless entry part) is part of the electronic "guts" of the key, or if it is buried inside the plastic of the key itself. I lean towards the former, but my mechanic has given me anecdotes that that may not be true.
If the guts contain the transponder, then, technically you do not need to go and have it programmed again.
BUT REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT WORKS OR NOT, GET THEM PROGRAMMED!
Why? Very simple. Although you have changed the physical means of unlocking the car, you have NOT changed the electronic means of entry. A determined thief can still get in with the old remote, and trash your car, or even force the lock, and, as long as the key is near the antenna, get the car to start, since the transponder is still recognized.
Anytime you program keys, ALL previously programmed keys are deleted, and the system starts fresh. You can't remove one and add one. All keys you want to work with the car must be present. If you still have two good keys, take them, get them re-programmed to the car, and the key the thief still has will no longer provide electronic access to the car.
If you need more of the electronic "guts" those are all the same from 2001-2009***, so you can buy any key that has them, pull the guts, slap a new battery in it, and get it programmed with the rest of the keys.
***They are the same, for each market the 9-5 was sold into. But European remotes WILL NOT WORK in US cars, or vice-versa.
