Have become a pet peeve of mine. Aggressive tread designs (strong directional tread pattern, like the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season (I OR II), or large block open patterns like the Goodyear Eagle GT) are most susceptible. The last Goodyears I had (above) started the howl at 5/32 or 6/32 tread left and got progressively louder and more annoying. I think I finally threw them away with 4/32 left. This is with proper rear alignment, good shocks, regular rotations, and apparently even wear - maybe a little bit of excess center wear.
I wouldn't worry about it - just plan on new tires soon. It seems to be more annoying from the back, in wagons at least, but it's annoying enough from the front. You might get a bit more wear from the front (fewer miles, of course, but more tread used up). When you replace the tires, I would recommend something like a Conti Contact DW or Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric (All season or summer). (the recommendations are meant to be a sample of the kind of tread pattern to look for, not necessarily an endorsement). I ran the original Michelin Pilot Primacy (circa 2002) down to the legal limit with no untoward noises, and they had 3 continuous ribs outside and a block tread on the inner two ribs.
