All ECUs manufactured until 2000 had the same manufacturing problem, it just took a while to show up. The english manufacturer used rubber distances that did not agree with Saabs specifications. The rubber material reacted with the conformal coating of the printed circuit board and the result was a broken coating that allowed moisture to penetrate the circuit board and corrode the circuit traces.

The SID problem also affected 1998 models. The problem is the connection between the circuit board and the display. The SID I looked at was manufactured by Nokia. Funny that Nokia have had many display problems on their mobile phones the last few years...

The reason not much is heard about 1998 models is that the majority of posts on the forum comes from Saab owners in the US, and as there is no 1998 models in the US not much is said about them.
