Can't say why the brand new bulbs don't work but as for moving a switch with old bulbs inside. These bulbs gets very sensitive to shaking and rustle when they get old so it would not surprise me if you killed the old bulbs by disconnecting the harness and moving the switch over to the other harness.
I have sometimes taken a switch out to replace the one burned out bulb just to find the other one dead when I plug the switch back in.
Still doesn't explain why the new bulbs died.
Did you twist them in to full locked position? They are sometimes stubborn and you need a well fitting screwdriver to grab the slot and turn the bulb so that it make contact.
