Not 100% relibale info since Mobil keeps its formula secret and reserves the right to change everything without notice - but the consensus is that:
* Mobil 1 0w40 - is the only "true PAO-based synthetic" Mobil 1 oil in the US
* the rest of Mobil 1 lineup is just hydrocracked dyno oil
* "High mileage" Mobil 1 oil just has extra "anti-wear" additives like zinc, etc.
Presumably PAO-based synthetic oil better resists breakdown (and conversion to sludge) but cost significantly more to produce than hydrocracked oil. The only reason 0w40 costs the same as other Mobil 1 oils in the US is that they do not want to draw attention to the fact that the other oils are inferior. Afaik, 0w40 is not available in 5 liter jugs so it does not get the "volume" discount unlike the rest of Mobil 1 grades.
BTW, all this is applicable to the US market only. In Europe hydrocracked oil is not allowed to be called "synthetic".
