Worn blower motor brushes, most likely. When they wear down to the end, they have a tendancy to make a poor contact, especially during the high-current motor start phase. Thumping or driving vibration will jostle the commutator/brushes enough to get the motor started. Once the armature is moving it will normally keep running until it is turned off.
You can try replacing the brushes, but it is hardly straightforward. The brushes are not available as a replacement part, so you have to find some that look like they might fit, file them down so they slide in the holder without binding, then compress the brush and spring in the holder while trying to solder the end cap on. Extra hands are helpful. Quite often, the commutator is so worn that the brush sticks out and gets cocked in the holder, failing after about 6 months. (Ask me how I know this.)
Best solution is to bite the bullet and buy a new blower motor.
