Since you know what the fuel pump sounds like you could listen for that one every time you turn on the ignition and before you crank over the engine.
If you hear the familiar priming buzz from the pump for a few seconds and then the engine does not fire up, listen again for the buzz when you release the key from cranking position, if you hear the pump for a split second, it is probably not the fuel pump.
For time being when testing you could remove the pump cover and have back seat up for easy listening.
CKP sensors goes bad on the V6 and if it is old, you should replace it even though the more common way of failure is when hot. It is still a few cases where it failed when cold.
