Pinging, perhaps? Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Mon, 9 Dec 2013 06:10:02 In Reply to: Crazy clatter under boost, Cmack, Sat, 7 Dec 2013 00:10:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
What motor? Boost is different on the various turbo motors, so that could help in the diagnosis.
But it sounds like it could be pinging (aka "knocking"), a condition where the fuel/air mix ignites spontaneously in the combustion chamber (and never when you want it to).
First thing to eliminate, if it is pinging, is the fuel.
What grade gas do you fill it with? Regular? Mid-Grade? Premium? If you are not already using premium, bump it up a grade on the next tank. BTW - the manual specifies Premium for the V6 and Aero
If you are using premium, what brand is it? If it's an off-brand, you might want to try the same grade of a "better" national brand like Shell, Sunoco, etc.
Or at the least, switch gas stations and see if the problem goes away.
Trionic only has so many tricks up its sleeve to reduce or eliminate pinging. Once the boost is back to basic boost, and the spark is retarded all the way back, it can't do anything more.
Also, If you had any enhancements done to the Trionic for more power, you should be using Premium grade fuel.
As an aside - If you have a 4, you have the Black DI cassette in it, yes?
