A battery in storage with no load: it's enemy is self discharge and sulfation of the plates.
You could store the battery for a long time if it were maintained with a high quality charger, one that monitors the battery drain, charging temp, acceptance rate, etc. But a charger like that will cost more than the battery (more than 2 or 3 even).
failing that you could "manually" maintain it by hooking up a "dumb" trickle charger occasionally. You'd have to be a bit OCD about it though in terms of how long each charge event lasts and the time between charging events. You may not want to commit to babysitting a battery for the next few years.
Why not put the new one in your car now, and sell the older one?
