It is possible a generic cable may work, but Saab uses anything but a generic cable.
From the photo on eeuroparts site, the Saab 4 cyl positive cable for 99-01 has two wires off the battery post (permanently attached), one goeing to the fuse block, the other goes on to the starter (just a lug crimped in the middle of the cable), then the alternator.
The reason an earlier cable will probably not work in a later car, with the rotated battery is that pretty much any way you cut it, the positive post will end up needing more cable on the 02- than on the -01...
