My son bought a great 2004 95 Aero wagon a few months ago. After a 100 miles or so of driving he realized his left rear tire started cupping badly. Of course when we rotated it to the front, the cupping continued until the car was close to un-drivable.
Mileage was 122K miles and the shocks were a bit weak as well. Being a wagon the rear springs were sagged. We installed Koni sports from Genuinesaab. In the rear we used the upper perch mount and a 25mm spacer. This brought the rear ride height back up to 610mm where it should be.
We had bushings and tools to put them in, but the trailing arm and lateral arm bushings were OK.
While we were at it we installed a set of R1 Concepts drilled and slotted rotors with ceramic pads.
We also installed fresh tires only drove to the alignment shop because we suspected the alignment was bad.
We brought the car to a great alignment shop, Bob's Alignment in Canoga Park, CA. Bob has been doing alignments for 40 years or so. They did a 4 wheel alignment on the car without any computers and mirrors. Just the old fashion way. Lots of skill and knowledge and manual adjustment tools. bob took about 2 hours to do it. I gave him the factory specs from the WIS and he set the Saab to those specs.
Camber front and rear was on spec.
He found the rear was a mess. Right rear had a lot of toe-OUT. The left or driver's side was not too bad. Bob loosened both rear trailing arm mounts to adjust the rear toe. the front had too much toe at the passenger side.
All this work was less than $100 which is a bargain to say the least. If you are in So Cal I highly recommend Bob's.
We suspect that the PO probably NEVER had an alignment done. The lesson here is to make sure your rear ride height is proper and have a good alignment done. In an extreme case you can ruin a good set of tires and the Saab can become almost undriveable.
Night and day difference in the way the car drives.....awesome improvement.
