Rubber shifter surround - did it change?

Hi everyone - I just replaced our totaled 2006 wagon with a 2008. Low miles...35k!
It is pristine except for the shifter jalousie. Funny, if you look at photos of cars for sale, I'd say about 20% of them have a broken jalousie!
My question is about the rubber surround. I put everything back together but the rubber ring is loose - it doesn't 'snap' into place at all, and when I initially removed this piece it felt more like I was peeling it off than pulling it off if that makes sense. Were these glued in? Ideas on getting it back on looking its best?
