I am currently running 205/55R16 Nokian Hakka R's... A non-studded friction only winter tire. I am pretty underwhelmed by the 9-5's performance in snow with these tires (and with the Michelin Primacy Alpin 215/55R16's that preceded them)... at least in comparison to our c900 running 185/65R15 Nokian Hakka4's... the c900 drives circles around the 9-5 in snow and ice (even though the 9-5 has tcs and abs and the c900 does not).

So... 205/55R16 is a very close match to 225/45R17 (about 0.4% smaller - totally negligible). 195/60R15 is a fair bit smaller (3%), so it would change your speedometer/odometer readings somewhat (that said 205/55R15 is even smaller - too small imho for a 9-5, but if you were ok with that maybe 195/60R15 will be fine). 195/65R15 is a much better choice as it is exactly the same size as 225/45R17 (the stock size I run in summer), plus it is taller which is a good thing in snow and slush. I would get that tire. Actually, where you are allowed studs (I'm not) and want them (I wish I could), I would get Nokian Hakka 7 or 8 with studs in 195/65R15. That is an available size: 195/65R15 95 T XL (so the load rating is even good). Studded hakkas are amazing! Or at least the old ones sure were...

I have a newer 9-5 with bigger brakes, so 16" is the smallest rim I can use. I'm wondering if anyone here has run 195/60R16 on the 9-5? I can get the Hakka R2 as a 195/60R16 93 R XL so again, load rating is ok. Anything else we should be considering going "really narrow" on these cars? Are these getting too narrow for the oem/stock 16" alloy rims (specifically, mine are the twin 5 spokes off the 9-3ss)?
