I did some work with such things. More general info in link. Used a crossed wire Anemometer that could resolve relative direction of flow in X-Y plane. The wires were 10 microns, tungsten and platinum plated. When they were damaged, you welded on new wires with a very tiny spot welder under a stereo microscope. If you caught the light just right, you could see that the wire was still there. These very small wires could resolve turbulence in a turbulent flow and we were mapping flow in a stator section downstream of a axial flow fan stage. The results were pure noise, but when you averaged out the flow over many cycles relative to a clock reading the fan's location, you got great curves. By measuring on multiple cylindrical planes, you had 3-D flow information. However, the technology to image that did not exist at the time.

When I had my NG900, there was talk about the effects on the MAF as well as concerns that dirt might flow through the filter. I smeared some grease on the cover of the filter box, downstream of the filter. I had thoroughly cleaned the filter cover first. Months later I remove the cover and and wiped with a clean white tissue and there was no visual sign of any dirt. Another time I had oiled the filter after cleaning with obviously too much oil. Again, later I removed the cover and swabbed and there was not evidence that the inside of the cover was anything other than clean and dry.

With the diesel variant of the 9-5 paper air filter, we gave a long life/capacity low restriction air filter.
