Other than the fact that you just bought the car it might not be extremely painful. Check out car-part junk yard search on the web. Prices on used 9-5 automatic transmission's isn't too bad. Also I might try to checkout the wiring and specs to see if there is any reason the newer one can't be installed. I checked the Transmission Control Module (TCM) part numbers and they were different part numbers but now they use the same part number. So all the wiring at that end of the harness should be the same. It might be as easy as reprogramming the TCM after upgrading.
Oh, buy the way what is wrong with your current transmission? If it has the double apply and clunk when selecting gears often changing out the fluid and performing the adaptation a few times can fix that. Good Luck, Bernie at George Riggin Specialty Automotive
