What I believe in is to diagnose the problem correctly and then make a decision if it make sense to repair it or not.
A ticking, clicking, clacking, thumping, rattling and more, noises from the engine can be created from a wide variety of places.
All depending on how trained your ear is and how well you know the Saab engines and their different noises, it can be hard (or easy) to figure it out.
Have you removed the serpentine belt to take all those rotating pieces out of the equation?
Have you listened with an automotive stethoscope to the top of valve cover over timing chain to rule out the chain slapping on valve cover? Maybe even remove the valve cover and replace that rubber pad inside and when you have the valve cover off, slightly press on each of the lifters to see if any of them are loose.
With the stethoscope you can also move it across the valve cover and see if you can pinpoint the loudest section meaning if it is cylinder 1, 2, 3 or 4 make the most noise.
Next is to listen to the bottom of the engine moving it across the oil pan or side of engine block and see if you can pinpoint the same cylinder being noisy and if the bottom of engine is noisier than the top of engine.
Yes, if the rod bearing is worn out and if the crankshaft is not damaged, it will probably be quieter with a new bearing installed.
