Alternator again??? update maybe not Posted by Dano in Texas [Email] (#1125) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Dano in Texas) on Thu, 15 May 2014 14:20:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2003 Aero sedan, 142,495 miles - Following my water pump replacement due to a leak, I still had an intermittent chirp at idle on the passenger side (US) near the firewall. Thinking it could be the tensioner, I swapped out with an old spare to see if that helped. Still chirping. I used a long wooden dowel between the engine and my ear and narrowed the sound down to the alternator. Sounds worse through the dowel.
In Mar 2011 at 105,665 miles I replaced an electrically failed alternator with a reman Bosch unit. It's been three years and 36,830 miles.
Update: My car guy neighbor listened to it and said it sounded more like a pulley. A bearing would have more a continuous whine. He noticed the tensioner pulley looked a little wobbly. So I'm going to change out pulleys and see if that makes a difference and also crawl underneath and see if anything is loose around the alternator and vibrating.
