not quite right
The plug is used to measure the conductivity across the spark gap after ignition. The result is used to avoid knocking and to allow ignition timing control to avoid knocking. The system can control boost pressure to avoid detonation, adapting to the fuel octane etc.
With a sharp electrode such as the platinum plugs, the voltage stress can increase conductivity VS the blunt electrode of the BCPR[6,7] plugs. Electrode heat can also shift the signal, so cooler running BCPR7 plugs may have an advantage as well. The BCPR plugs can make a situation look less knock prone and the system can then be a bit more aggressive with timing and boost.
So that is the non-technical explanation. You can find descriptions from the original research from many years ago. However that does not describe the effects of the different plugs, that is inferred. This topic has been discussed here a few times over the years. Might be more in other forums such as the original NG900 which covered the Viggen T7 and what folks found with BCPR vs platinum. Others confirmed with dyno runs.
