Trionic uses the plugs as a sensor as well as to create a spark. This goes way back before the 9-5 and before double platinum plugs were used in SAABs.
They are probably not *exactly* the same but probably close. I would think gap matters more as well as details of plug geometry and plug temperature. You really want the right plugs from NGK, not something compatible from Bosch or whatnot. That really does matter! Once you are on NGK's of the right spec, I think the differences are probably less significant... The earlier Aeros etc spec'ed the copper NGK whereas the newer ones spec the double platinums. I think the main reason for the (expensive) double platinums is the long life. Car manufacturers now want to spec long service changes, so this is just part of that.
I have double platinums in my 2004 arc. I think next time I will go for single platinums. I've used those in my other Saabs with no ill effects. They are 1/10th the cost of double platinums here and easier to source. The coppers are not super easy to source either locally and only save a small amount over single platinums.
With all this, I will offer the caveat that I am not "tuning" my Saabs, they aren't track cars, so they offer loads of performance on normal roads without this. YMMV if you need to squeeze out every last ounce of performance!
