Suburban will have lots of tolerance for clearance of tires. If you go too tall on a SAAB, you will get rubbing in the fenders which may damage tires, fenders, or both. The rear suspensions in these cars are a little weak also and tend to sag - if yours is sagging (or if you load it heavily someday thereby inducing sag) you will be even more likely to rub.
You didn't mention the type of 9-5. Is it an Aero or have you modified the suspension to be stiffer/lower? What shocks etc? How many miles? What tires are on the car now?
I actually find the 9-5 (2004 arc) to be too soft. I'm currently running Koni shocks on ours, stiffer rear springs, and 225/45R17 performance tires. Now it feels about right.
If you add height to the tires, you will change your speedometer reading. I think you will find that you will get too much speedo error to get significant increase in softness from the same tire model as you have now (but in a taller size)... I agree with the other posters: if you really want a softer ride, get some 16" rims and put on some premium touring tires. FWIW, the tires will be cheaper than 17", and the rims will cost you less to acquire than you would get if you sell the 17" rims. But personally I would not do that because I think the car benefits from the added stiffness of 17" rims... If you want a softer ride on 17" rims, why not try a more compliant tire of the stock tire size? Again, touring oriented vs performance oriented will help in that regard...
