you can get a compression test done to check the hg... but, your symptom could easily be a slowly leaking water pump or coolant bypass valve. Our water pumped leaked a bit for a while, and then all of a sudden it got much worse... like top it off every night for a week, until it was top it off to drive 15 minutes to top off again (well that drive fortunately was the drive to my indy to fix it, because I knew I was pushing my luck). Leaky o-rings = new pump for all the work. Do belts pulleys etc while you're in there unless they are new.
In our situation, there was at most a drop under the car (in behind passenger front corner, maybe 1 and a half feet in from the bumper and fender). Put a piece of clean white paper in there overnight and you might spot something! It took us until the last week or so to detect this, and we had been losing coolant/topping off for maybe 2 months!
