9-5 SE V6 wagon exhaust leak - DIY? Shop?

My 2000 9-5 SE V6 wagon has a pretty loud exhaust leak. I took it to a local independent repair shop; they said that the flex pipes are shot, and wanted a bit over $1,100 to replace the catalytic converter assembly to fix it. They allowed as how the catalyst itself seems fine. The car has no codes.
Given they were quoting me parts costs about double those I've seen for quality aftermarket parts, I passed. That's a lot of money for this poor old horse.
First, should I be trying to find a muffler shop that will patch in new flex pipe, or just replacing the assembly? Second, if the answer is "replace the assembly", is this a reasonable DIY job for someone not a habitual car repair guy? What problems would I be likely to face?
The car has 134K miles, most of them in heavy road-salt country. The rear muffler shed its outer casing this winter. My big concern is that everything will be rusted solid, not something I'd want to tackle under jack stands...
I don't do a lot of work on my own cars, but I know my way around a wrench, I've got good mechanical aptitude and a decent place to work in. What I can't do is weld.
If anyone knows of a good shop for this kind of repair work in the north-central Connecticut or Springfield, MA area, I'd love the referral.
