It's like a 5 wire to 4 wire conversion . My trailer is almost permanently on my wagon . I thought the OEM plug and go was the answer , until I realized the search was futile in the desire for perfection ..could not find one that money could buy , {RIP Saab Dealerships}
I have a Commercial Drivers License , and must always comply with safety regulations , even in my personal vehicle . Brake and Stop/Turn Signals are very serious elements on a a trailer , if you are not confident in splicing in the harness , that's understandable . All of the connections can be done inside the trunk/boot area , few worries for water/corrosion . Run the pigtail wires through the rubber grommet .
If you still are unsure , stop by a RV/Trailer place , most will inspect your wiring for safety .
In all my experience , the car never notices the trailer lighting or brake circuit , or maybe I have been able to hook things up correctly !
Good Luck , and remember...Safety is # 1 !
