I've always thought fuel gauges are non-linear in the sense that they have more "precision" in the lower part of the gauge where knowing how much fuel you really have is more important than the upper part when the tank is more near full. So for example, it may stay up near full for a long time and move "slowly" down, then once it reaches a certain point (e.g., 75% fuel left), it will move with more "granularity" and "quickly" to allow the driver to estimate the actual amount of remaining fuel more accurately.
Maybe I'm way off base and I don't know that it's really applicable to this conversation, just got me thinking about it :-)
