Backup light mystery

Saw a reflection of my 9-5 Aero sedan yesteday - driver's side backup (white) light was inop. Took off the trim panel, replaced the bulb with a new one, switched key to "On," observed light now working. Replaced trim panel and trunk lid handle. Went back and switched on again - backup light out again!
Hmm. Okay, removed trim, pulled 2-socket lamp panel, removed new bulb, checked socket contacts, replaced bulb, switched key to "On," lamp working. Suspecting problem with trunk lid wiring harness (although mine was replaced years ago under warranty with the entire rigid/protected assembly...), worked lid up and down numerous times, lamp stayed lit. Turned off key. Replaced trim panel, turned key to "On," - lamp out!
Tired of removing/replacing trim. The wiring to the lamp sockets seems fine. Anyone have any ideas?
TIA!
