I have a 2003 Aero wagon (and I used to have a 2004 aero wagon, with the same setup)
I keep a full size ('05 Aero 17" wheel with 225/45) snow tire in my spare wheel well in the summer, and put one of my regular wheels (also 17" 225/45) in there in the winter. I place the wheel with the shiny side up so that I don't scrape it on the stud welded to the floor intended to keep the original spare from rattling around.
I can close my trunk floor flat with no rubbing at all. I have even made a DIC fit in the spare area by cutting a small piece of the Styrofoam that holds the tools. The DIC actually rubs the bottom of the fake trunk floor at the metal brace, but it latches into place, and lies flat.
Of course, the fabric spare tire cover rides higher and there is less space in there for other items. I only have my front license plate (and hardware) as well as some spare bulbs in that section.
I would miss having the self-holding hook if I took off the brace on the underside of the trunk floor!
Cheers,
~Peter
