The cable from the + side of the battery was gray. I thought it was supposed to look like that. It's actually red and black. I found out after spraying it down with a product from the ipd Volvo site called Corrosion Block. I also sprayed down the connector on the solenoid and cleaned as best I could. I can see about 3 mm of conductors on the + cable near the battery connector and they were white until sprayed Corrosion Block.
The car seems to start better and cranks somewhat quicker - it doesn't sound as strained. The negative cable off the battery looks good as does the mounting end on the transmission. I'll order and install a new positive cable. The acid test will be when my wife drives the car tomorrow.
