Job went fairly quickly: I installed new full assembly - sold as Walbro, but the outer bucket assembly is labelled Pierburg. Came with new O-ring seal and new threaded locking collar. I reused my home built tool created of 2 shelving brackets screwed together and turned with large Vise Grip plier. Pretty uneventful - disconnected DIC and pulled FP fuse (#15 on 2005), then cranked to relieve pressure. A catch pan was pre-positioned to receive the old pump as it was removed, so only a very slight drip onto carpet. Don't forget 1) remove fuel line connectors with great care to avoid breaking, 2) reinstall the metal safety clip after connecting the fuel lines, 3) line up the mark on top of the pump right hand side with the mark molded on the tank.
Our 2005 Arc was manufactured in January 2005 - so it has the "GM" fuel filter that clips in with quick release fittings. I needed to carefully cut down a "yellow" Lisle quick release tool about 3/32 of an inch shorter to be able to fit it into the available space for removing the fuel lines from the filter. If you do this, measure yourself and make the end very precisely square - too long and it won't fit but too short and it won't release. As others have shared, I do not like this design because renewing the sealing O-rings requires major effort (I reused and so far no leak).
I will save my old pump assembly for rebuild in case I need to install a new cartridge in either of our 9-5's at a future time.
