Blend door shaft problem

MY2004 Aero 4 cylinder..........After having received 2 08 and 2 11 ACC error codes, I removed the stepper motors on both sides. I discovered that the stop arms and the blend door shafts are not broken BUT the hex ends of the blend door shafts are cracked. It would seem that the stepper motor shafts have been spinning inside the blend door shafts. Has anyone had this situation? I was thinking that I need to cut the blend door shaft in order to install the aluminum repair kit. I am also concerned about what may have caused this situation. I would appreciate any suggestions.
