Scraping noise from belt area - Serp tensioner? Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Fri, 21 Nov 2014 08:11:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Patient is a 2000 SE 3.0l V6 Auto with 144k.
Timing belt, etc. was changed 47k ago, as were the water pump and serpentine belt.
Last week, I started to hear a scraping noise, like a bearing or bushing with no lubrication from the extreme right side of the engine bay. Initially, it happened only when the car was first started, but as of today, it was doing it my entire 35 mile commute. Noise can change pitch when engine revs change.
I'm guessing (hoping?) it is the serpentine belt tensioner or the tensioner pulley, but of course, it could be anything else over there. I've tried cycling lights and AC on and off to see if the noise changes, but it does not seem to. Power steering is OK.
Water pump should be good for another 50k or so (though I'll likely change it in the spring with the TBelt).
Does anyone know of anything specific that would make those noises besides the serpentine belt tensioner/pulley?
Not looking forward to having to get it fixed this close to Thanksgiving, when I'm planning an 800 mile trip...
