We have had four Audis. These are cars you do not want to own when the warranty sunsets. We kept one for 80k and regretted it, every month we had to throw another .5 - 1k at it. 90% of the issues were electrical related. And you can forget about much DIY on these, they are put together like a watch...nothing is easy to fix. Oil, filter changes and brakes are about all you can easily do.
They are nice cars, but...get your wallet out, if you want to keep them awhile. I guy at work the other day was pretty upset at the 6k estimate to replace a blown turbo in an 02 TT. 600.00 for parts, the rest was all labor, and that was from a reputable indie. 120k miles and he is ready to walk away from it.
Here we have folks rebuilding their own for not much coin at all. Crude as are cars are at times, they are much easier to work on and keep going. Parts seem to be pretty available, much better than 2 years ago when Saab was being dismantled.
We have had a 2010 Volvo S80 for a couple of years now, so far, so good. No problems at 48k...yet. But even changing the oil will be a PITA, you have to start by removing the PS reservoir and the thing will take 8 quarts of synthetic oil. It seems to be rather solidly built compared to my 9-5 but I can see it will be no joy to work on. Hopefully, not as bad as the Audis.
At the other end of the spectrum is my 19 year old Ford PU, cheap lawnmower crude, but is it ever easy to work on. Not much electronics back in those days. Changed all 4 shocks in an hour, and I took my time. Wish I could do that in the 9-5 right about now.
