Valve Cover oil breather pipe replacement tips Posted by Doug W [Email] (#2371) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Doug W) on Sun, 28 Dec 2014 19:47:54 In Reply to: Re: Valve Cover oil breather pipe replacement, SWEDECAR [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 27 Dec 2014 15:03:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've done the PCV check valve pipe as it typically breaks at the "damper" adjacent the valve cover clip. I had to release it from the oil seperator box from below. I used a small needle nose vise grip to squeeze the retaining bale, and then a small pry-bar to pry the plastic fitting from the "plastic box" that is the oil seperator. Removal of the fitting from the "box" is done from below so you can see what you're doing. A pry bar is required as I don't believe you'll get enough force just from a screwdriver - besides it being awkward and lacking clearance. The small vise-grip helps too as it frees your hands to manipulate the pry-bar and fitting.
Once the tube is free from the box it can be extricated from above. The PCV tube by the way is a real bar-room puzzle as it must be turned and twisted about three or four times from above before it's free. The Valve cover hose has less bends so it should be easier.
I did my valve cover gasket and broke the plastic "ears" you mention here. I used some baling wire and wrapped it around the hose and then was able to secure it to the flanges on the valve cover that interface with the plastic "ears" on the tube. The car has been like that now for about 8 months and 13,000 miles with no ill effects. I check it every time I check the oil.
BTW my car is an '04 Aero
