I live in NJ and typically one wouldn't think such a thing as an engine block heater would be necessary in this area but the month of December was one of the coldest on record around here. Also I suffer from back and neck problems from a recent surgery and the quicker the car can produce heat has become very important to me and given the cost of the option itself($25) it seemed like a great option to have. After having it about 2 weeks I have found the following procedure works best for my needs. I usually plug in the block heater around 10pm just before I go to sleep, I unplug it when I leave in the morning around 8:30am, then the air coming out of the heater/defroster outlets is nicely warmed but even after being plugged in all night it still takes another 2 to 3 minutes of the engine running for the heat to be what I consider hot. I have heard it suggested that you can plug it in for just 2 or 3 hours and that would be enough time to get warm air from the engine, I have already tried plugging it in for this time span and in my experience it simply isn't long enough to get warmed air on startup. All in all, if there are any of you out there that detest the cold as much as I than I would highly reccommend ordering this option as it is well worth it. Lastly, given the location where the block heater itself is installed into the engine block let the dealer do the install otherwise I can assure you that you will be the recipient of sore hands, fingers and a few skinned knuckles.
