The current (black) filter, I think, is the one with the filter retaining groove in the body. When I did a filter cut-em-up comparison, that style was notable in having the most capacity for filter medium area inside a given can. At the time, the Saab size Delco filter was also of the same style, which BTW was made in England. And it was blue. After a time, the Delco and OE Saab filters reverted to the usual smooth can style (which requires some kind of internal structure to contain the filtering medium rather than the groove on the side of the can) with less filtering medium area.
Now all this begs the question of "how good is
the filter paper inside", for which there is no obvious answer. Back in the day Delco sold a synthetic medium filter that tested much better than any paper medium filter. It was essentially a loose felt with a wire backing, and had the twin virtues of very high filtering efficiency and very low flow resistance. Fram is now selling that style as their premium filter. FWIW, the second best filter in the Delco sponsored test was the Purolator Pure One. Note also that Purolator is owned by MANN, the German filter company.
But to answer your question - I'd just use up what you already have.
